Hopes Dwindle For North Korea Meeting, Southern Primary Results, Olympics Scandal

USA experts said that with so many differences on denuclearization and other issues between the two nations, a detente between the United States and the DPRK requires time and patience more than ever.

South Korean President Moon Jae-In arrived at the White House Tuesday afternoon to meet with President Donald Trump before a highly-anticipated summit with North Korea.

Skepticism about the North's intentions have mounted in recent weeks after Kim's government pulled out of planned peace talks with the South last week, objecting to long-scheduled joint military exercises between USA and South Korean forces.

No weapons inspectors or nonproliferation experts have been invited to attend the event, which North Korea has said would "ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test".

Observers will be watching the nuclear test site destruction ceremony closely for any clues to the North's mood.

However, the Unification Ministry said today that Pyongyang had now granted them permission. -South Korean military exercises, and also threatened to abandon the planned Trump-Kim meeting, accusing the USA of a "one-sided demand" that it give up its nuclear weapons.

There was euphoria when the planned summit with the USA was announced but since then there have been doubts on both sides.

North Korea abruptly postponed high-level inter-Korean talks on May 16 - just hours before the meeting was scheduled to take place.

China's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday (May 23) that China has played a positive role on the Korean peninsula and hopes the planned US-North Korea summit can proceed smoothly. He said they had discussed their mutual goals for the talks.

Trump suggested the summit could be delayed rather than canceled: "It may not work out for June 12, but there is a good chance that we'll have the meeting".

North Korea has rejected unilateral disarmament and given no indication that it is willing to go beyond statements of broad support for the concept of universal denuclearisation. -South Korean military exercises that it calls an invasion rehearsal.

Both parties to the talks are invested in holding the meeting, with Kim seeing an opportunity for global legitimacy and Trump the prospect of securing Korean stability - and perhaps a Nobel Peace Prize.
