USA to open embassy in Jerusalem

Israeli Walla news site yesterday reported Israeli official sources saying that a USA delegation of 250 officials is expected to attend the ceremony, pointing out that the entire Israeli government will participate in receiving the delegation.

In March, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said that his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the USA move.

Trump, who announced that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel previous year, delivered on one of his presidential campaign promises to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Mayor Barkat said, "This is not a dream but reality".

According to a state department official, the interim embassy is a building that now operates as part of the US consulate in Jerusalem.

PNN further reports that Israeli authorities, on Monday, began putting up road signs in the occupied city of Jerusalem, which reads "The American Embassy", in preparation for its opening, next week, in synchronization with the Palestinian Nakba Day and the Israeli Day of Independence.

Trump's move was met with widespread protests in most countries in the world, except Israel and regional USA allies. "This is the path that we are on", one of the protesters Abu Hajar said.

"Those who will attend the ceremony will send a signal that they are encouraging the trampling of global legitimacy and the inherent rights of the Palestinian people", Erekat said as quoted in the statement.

Trump has been coy as to whether or not he would attend the ceremony, and Monday's statement did not list him as an attendee indicating he will not make an appearance. The highlight of the event is said to be the unveiling of the new embassy's seal. "It's like the United States is insisting on making the Palestinians remember this day as a very sad day in their history and in their struggle against the Israeli occupation", he said.

Since March 30, Palestinians have been partaking in a stint of consecutive weekly protests along the Gaza border that are set to climax on May 14, embassy opening day. Most agreements have foundered on the questions of territory, refugees and the status of Jerusalem. The Palestinians seek the eastern sector as capital of their hoped-for state.
