Barbara Bush: Condolences pour in from around country

Many of you are wondering how former President George H.W. Bush is doing after his wife of 73 years passed away.

On the death of the former first lady announced via Twitter the official family spokesperson Jim McGrath.

The Bushes, who were married January 6, 1945, had the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history. She often spoke wistfully of a time when "drugs, sex, and violence were not constantly thrust at us by television".

For seven months, Barbara and her husband sat in a NY hospital as doctors struggled to treat a cancer that at the time was poorly understood. She served only four years before her husband lost his campaign for a second term.

Barbara's time as first lady was shorter than most. Barbara will be buried by Robin's side in the family cemetery.

She also was not shy about the possibility of a female president, disarming a Wellesley College audience at a 1990 appearance protested by some on campus who questioned her credentials to address female graduates aiming for the workplace. George H.W. began as a US representative for Texas, where the family was from, and later became a United Nations ambassador, then the Republican Party chairman, as well as an ambassador to China.

Still, Barbara Bush promoted women's rights, and her strong personal views sometimes surfaced publicly and raised eyebrows - especially when they clashed with Republican Party politics. He was a professor at Rice University's Jones School of Business. She understood that with the role of first lady came not just an opportunity to live well but also the obligation to do good.

Barbara was known for a quick wit and a sharp temper. I expected her to be more imposing.

He went from student to student, asking each one what book they had read last, making sure to listen to each one's answer carefully.

The grace, honor and decency of Barbara Bush and her husband displayed are entirely absent in President Trump and his clan of grifters.

Only the second woman in American history to have had a husband and a son elected President (Abigail Adams was the first), Bush was seen as a plainspoken public figure who was instantly recognizable with her signature white hair and pearl necklaces and earrings.

Barbara recounted that she had not cooked in 12 years. "And as a result of her soul being comforted on the deathbed, my soul is comforted".

- Barbara Bush's funeral will be held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where she and former President George H.W. Bush have been devoted members since the 1950s.
