Waymo, Jaguar Team Up on Self-Driving Fleet

Waymo says the four-door Jaguar cars, which are being shown at New York's International Auto Show this week, will hit the road later this year in Phoenix, Arizona, where it will coincide with the launch of Waymo's self-driving vehicle service.

The collaboration is estimated to be able to facilitate one million trips per day. The minivans presumably offer everyday ride-hailing services while the Jaguars offer a more luxurious travel experience.

Waymo, formerly Google's self-driving project, will work with Jaguar to design and engineer the vehicles - the first premium models to be part of the Waymo project.

Waymo said it plans to place 20,000 autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles on the road for tests in 2018.

Waymo has been working on self-driving technology since 2009.

In September, Bloomberg reported that Jaguar Land Rover was weighing purchases of technology companies that could boost its efforts to roll out electric vehicles and autonomous driving systems. The current fleet of Chrysler Pacifica minivans are capacious but boringly earnest; the homegrown Google "pod" cars were always cute, but never cool.

Jaguar Land Rover and Waymo will work together to design and engineer autonomous vehicles and the auto that will come equipped with this technology will be none other than the recently launched I-Pace. The human-piloted version only went on sale earlier this month, and subject to adding Waymo technology and testing, it's penned for a 2020 self-driving public release.

Waymo has already tested its autonomous technology in 25 US cities, and adding thousands more Pacifica Hybrids and 20,000 Jaguars will support the expansion of its service. It's a sleek SUV that's said to be ideal for city driving.

Mr. Krafcik declined to say whether he thought the crash was a setback for the industry or whether new regulations are needed.

Following that incident, Uber suspended all of its autonomous vehicle testing operations. "That's the world we're building".

Back in October 2017, Waymo conducted the first public road tests with no one in the driver's seat in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler.

Later this year Waymo will launch the world's first self-driving transportation service allowing members of the public to use Waymo's app to request a vehicle.
