Briefing papers warned Trump: 'DO NOT CONGRATULATE' Putin

The White House has said that there were no specific plans right away for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his newly re-elected Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Later Tuesday, The Washington Post reported that Trump had defied the advice of his aides not to congratulate Putin on his election victory. The president also did not broach the topic of the recent poisonings of a former Russian spy and his daughter in the United Kingdom with a powerful nerve agent-an attack both the British and US governments have blamed on Russia-as he was reportedly instructed to do in his briefing notes.

Trump himself hasn't been shy about sharing his cordial communications with Putin.

Trump did so anyway, and on Wednesday he defended the call, saying George W. Bush did not have the "smarts" to work with Putin, and that Barack Obama and his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton "didn't have the energy or chemistry" with the Russian leader.

"We'll probably be meeting in the not-too-distant future", Trump said of Putin, though Sanders emphasized that nothing was planned.

A Trump confidant who asked not to be named said that Trump was angry about the leak and a White House official said Kelly was "frustrated and deeply disappointed". The White House said Trump and Putin has had "a very good call".

Though some Republicans have joined the criticism of Trump's rapport with Putin, few have been as outspoken as McCain, the longtime Senate Armed Services Committee chairman who is undergoing treatment for brain cancer.

Sen. Jeff Flake, a noted Republican critic of Trump, disputed Sanders' remarks. The United States has not taken similar action against Russian Federation for the attack, though the Trump administration last week sanctioned 19 individuals and five entities for their roles in the 2016 campaign meddling.

Federer loses to Del Potro By
Federer's attention will need to switch quickly to the next event on the tour, the Miami Open, which begins on Wednesday. Federer said he enjoyed the battle against Del Potro, who won for just the seventh time in 25 clashes between the pair.

The source told CNN that the incident has again given air to Trump's long-held belief that members of his administration are actively working against him.

"It's important for us to have a dialogue with Russian Federation so that we can focus on some areas of shared interest", said Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Any interactions between Trump and Putin are closely watched given the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

"I had a call with President Putin and congratulated him on the victory, his electoral victory".

"An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections", McCain wrote on Twitter.

I am unconvinced by Clara Holzer's claim that US President Donald Trump is "correct to say that we should wait for the facts before commenting" on the United Kingdom spy poisoning.

After the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Britain said it would not send royals or government ministers to the soccer tournament, though the England team will compete. Three of Trump's associates - former national security adviser Michael Flynn, deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and campaign aide George Papadopoulos - have pleaded guilty to lying to investigators and agreed to cooperate.
