Brian Gutekunst explains release of Jordy Nelson

The Packers are expected to sign former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham to a three-year deal when the free-agent signing period begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, sources informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

With the Packers releasing Jordy Nelson on Tuesday, the offense is going to look quite different going forward.

The tag for tight ends will run teams around $10 million this year, but Graham was already making that.

Nelson has been Aaron Rodgers's favorite target for virtually their entire careers with the Packers.

Whereas Thompson was extreme in his aversion to throwing money at veterans on the open market, Gutekunst has vowed to take an "aggressive" approach to free agency. The Packers are still trying to recoup part of Bennett's $6.3 million signing bonus; they lost a grievance but have filed an appeal. His 520 receiving yards represented a significant drop-off from 2016, when he had 923 receiving yards.

McCray started eight games in 2017 and was the feel-good story of the season after making the team in training camp, less than a year removed from working at a hotel and playing in the Arena Football League.

Robinson, a second-round pick out of Penn State in 2014 by the Jaguars, had his best year in 2015, when he caught 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has caught at least nine touchdowns in five of the last seven seasons.

Prior to that, Nelson had three straight seasons with over 85 receptions and 1,250 yards.

After Davante Adams signed a four-year, $58 million contract extension in December, it seemed likely the Packers would have a hard time keeping both Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Rodgers, like everyone else, had to see that Nelson wasn't himself late last season - and not all of that should be blamed on fill-in quarterback Brett Hundley's inaccuracy.
