Dick's Sporting Goods no longer will sell assault-style firearms, will ban high-capacity magazines and will not sell any guns to people younger than 21, the company announced Wednesday, a significant move for the retail giant in the midst of renewed calls for national gun reform.
Several major corporations, including MetLife, Hertz and Delta Air Lines, have cut ties with the NRA since the Florida tragedy, but none were retailers that sold guns.
Seventeen people were killed in that shooting on February 14, which was allegedly perpetrated by a former student who is 19 years old and used an AR-15 assault rifle.
Dick's CEO Edward Stack said the company's thoughts are prayers are with the victims of the Parkland school shooting. "Gun violence is an epidemic that's taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America - our kids", Stack said.
Stack added that the company is "going to take a stand and step up and tell people our view and, hopefully, bring people along into the conversation". "The nation has heard you", Stack said.
Beyond raising the minimum age to buy firearms, Kroger and Dick's said they would no longer sell assault-style rifles like the kind used in the Parkland shooting at the limited number of stores where they were offered.
The announcement was actually the second time Dick's has made such a promise.
Dick's Sporting Goods early on Wednesday chose to end all sales of assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines and to raise its restriction of gun sales to people 21 or older.

"I am also ending my employment with Dick's Sporting Goods due to the fact that I am being discriminated against, I am twenty years old and therefore barred from pushing a firearm from a Dick's Sporting Goods store or their subsidiaries", the letter continued.
This time, Stack said, the changes will be permanent.
"As every business owner, they have a right to do what they feel is good for their business", gun shop owner Bryan Hearn said. The suspect in the case bought a gun not used in the killings at a Dick's location in Florida.
- High capacity magazines will no longer be sold.
Similar announcements have been made in the past by the Pennsylvania-based company headed by Stack.
"There are plenty other guns for sale in the store that are semi-automatic, but don't happen to look like an assault rifles", said Tyler Mizell.
