Justice department's no 3 official to take Walmart's top legal job

The New York Times first reported Friday that Brand is resigning after nine months on the job. Brand brings deep academic and professional experience to her role, coming to the company from the U.S. Department of Justice, where she served as Associate Attorney General, the department's third-ranking position.

Sessions applauded Brand for her service to the DOJ, calling her "a lawyer's lawyer".

During the Obama administration, Brand served on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, which studied the 702 program two years ago.

The White House has said that Trump does not plan to fire Rosenstein, but the president himself seemed to leave that possibility open when asked last week by reporters if he had confidence in the deputy attorney general. If Trump fired Rosenstein or he quit or recused himself, Brand would have taken his place, according to the Justice Department line of succession.

And her departure leaves another vacancy at the justice department, which still lacks Senate-confirmed leaders over many of its most important divisions. "I know the entire Department of Justice will miss her, but we join together in congratulating her on this new opportunity in the private sector".

Representatives from various countries and worldwide organizations were also invited as observers of the congress. Also on Tuesday, Jaberi Ansari held talks with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

Trump has lambasted the Justice Department in recent weeks, particularly after the release of a House Intelligence Committee (HIC) memo in early February that alleged surveillance abuses against his presidential campaign undertaken by the DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation. That job would now fall to the solicitor general, Noel Francisco.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -The Justice Department's No. 3 official is planning to step down at a time of turmoil in the agency. But if he was let go, that would have left Brand next in line to oversee Mueller's investigation, among Rosenstein's other responsibilities. "She will always remain part of the Department of Justice family". Reporting to President and CEO Doug McMillon, Brand will oversee the mega-retailer's legal, global ethics and compliance and global investigation, security, aviation and travel departments, as well as serving as corporate secretary. As Associate Attorney General, Brand oversaw thousands of attorneys and professionals across the department's civil law divisions, among them antitrust, tax and environment and natural resources.

She had recently pushed Congress to renew a foreign intelligence surveillance program that gives the United States government authority to spy on foreigners located outside the country. Trump said he won't release the Democrats' memo.

Brand clerked for Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Charles Fried from 1998-1999 and for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy from 2002-2003.
