5-Star CB Patrick Surtain Jr. Commits To Alabama Over LSU, Clemson

Rarely thrown at, Surtain made 17 tackles and had one interception in eight games as a senior for the Patriots, which won their fourth Class 5A state title in five years and finished the season ranked as high as fourth nationally in one of MaxPreps' polls.

Campbell is the No. 2 ranked corner in this class, behind Surtain Jr., and is the 12th commitment for Georgia ranked in the top-5 of his position.

Alabama added three other three-star prospects Wednesday, giving it a total of 20 in the signing class. Entering Wednesday, LSU was viewed as the heavy favorite for Surtain, who attends high school in the Hurricanes' backyard, at American Heritage School in Plantation, Fla., but has family ties in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and had developed a close relationship with LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond.

Without Surtain and Goodrich, LSU will sign no cornerbacks and no quarterbacks - with LSU quarterback target James Foster of Montgomery, Alabama, expected to pick Florida State - and just two three-star running backs.

Still, the Tigers had nine defensive backs in the National Football League in 2017, including Super Bowl winning cornerback Jalen Mills with Philadelphia, to Alabama's seven.

LSU can only sign 25, according to the new NCAA scholarship signing class limits, and it inked 21 back in the early signing period from December 20-22.

Georgia, which is in its second full recruiting cycle under third-year head coach and former Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, dethrowned Alabama with No. 1 class with a country's-best seven five-star products in its 26-member signing class. Surtain's signing could have helped push LSU's class from No. 11 in the nation by Rivals.com to perhaps No. 7 or No. 8, Scarborough said.

The 6-foot-2 was believed to be deciding between Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Miami. They are also expected to sign te No. 5 safety, Kelvin Joseph (6-0, 185).

Foster, who is not ranked nationally and is No. 11 in Alabama, visited LSU on January 12, Alabama on January 19 and Florida State on February 1.

"I think they get Surtain", Michael Scarborough of Rivals.com/TigerBait.com said Wednesday. He visited Alabama, Texas A&M and Ole Miss last month.
