Former Michigan Gov. John Engler To Be Named MSU's Interim President

Rachael Denhollander is not happy with the reported selection of John Engler as Interim President at Michigan State University.

A spokesperson for the AG's office confirmed to The Athletic that the list of those asked to hand over all written communications can certainly grow as the investigation "into systemic issues with sexual misconduct at Michigan State University" progresses and will cover more than just MSU's handling of the disgraced former physician. Students disrupted the meeting as the board selected former MI governor John Engler as interim president.

Engler graduated from Michigan State and spent decades in politics, including leading the state as governor from 1991 to 2003.

He was appointed to fill the vacancy left by the school's president, who resigned amid accusations that the school mishandled sexual assault allegations against former sports doctor Larry Nassar. Nassar is a former MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor who was sentenced to prison last week for 40 to 175 years.

Larry Nassar pleaded guilty on January 24 for seven counts seven counts of criminal sexual conduct, concluding the end of a seven-day trial during which more than 150 women testified against him.

Also coming on board is another former governor, Jim Blanchard, 75.

Amid the fallout, the board had expressed support for Simon before her resignation, while she continued to face vast pressure from students, faculty and legislators.

Meanwhile, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the MI attorney general's office are among the official entities that have announced investigations of MSU's handling of the rampant sexual abuse by Nassar that went unnoticed and unchecked for over 25 years.

McCabe said they would call for a no-confidence vote in the Board of Trustees. "I am proud of my support of their work even though the results have been very painful to all who watched", Simon said.

"I have confidence that John Engler will reflect our desire to keep a focus on survivors and the victims", said Brian Breslin, the board's chairman.

Faculty and student leaders raised similar concerns at the trustees' meeting Wednesday, including one who sat for a few minutes in the middle of the board's conference table.

Nassar, who also has been sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography charges, will appear in a MI court this week for another prison sentence.

"I have one mandate for you", Mosallam said in reference to Engler. She said that faculty members made their opposition clear to the board and learned that the appointment was going forward from media reports.

The choice was applauded by both politicians and people who have worked with the men. "So much for the Board's words about change and accountability".

"Mark Emmert, when he met with me, said the NCAA can't be 'state actors'". He will also have to shake up a culture that critics say led to the university turning a blind eye to Nassar's victims for years. "I suggest new leadership is needed".
