But Tim Cook doesn't recommend they do

"We will tell somebody saying we're slightly reducing, or we're reducing your performance by some amount in order to not have an unexpected restart, and if you don't want it, you can turn it off", Cook said.
It also will give them the option to turn off the throttling feature the company instituted a year ago to prevent older devices from shutting down when batteries became too weak.
An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment beyond Cook's remarks or say when the update would be available to consumers.
"We're going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery, so it's very, very transparent".
Cook was responding to questions about the recent finding that Apple slows down the performance of iPhones whose batteries have degraded to that level. The resulting uproar saw the company accused of deliberately slowing down older devices to encourage users to buy new ones, a practice known as "planned obsolescence".
The company did not confirm which version of iOS they would be releasing, although considering that the new iOS 11.2.5 beta 6 includes this bug fix, then there is a pretty good chance that the software will land next week. "We apologize. There's been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we're making", Apple said in December. He later added, "Maybe we should have been clearer, as well".
Alongside the option to turn off the slowdown, Apple will also introduce much more detailed monitoring of battery health for users. Apple has since apologised and announced it would be dropping the price of replacement iPhone batteries from US$79 (NZ$108) to US$29 throughout 2018.
"We deeply apologize for anybody that thinks we had some other kind of motivation", Cook told ABC. No further details were shared, but presumably both iOS and macOS devices will receive the update, as both can be affected by the text string in the Messages app.
