Sanchez said the driver was coming home from a party, where "he had obviously had too much to drink and maybe too much to smoke". The 22-year-old driver, who is from Hayward, is suspected of smoking marijuana as well as drinking alcohol before the crash, Sanchez said.
Assistant Chief Ernest Sanchez said at at a Monday morning press conference that a speeding red Cadillac hit the back of the patrol vehicle Camilleri and Velasquez were in, reports CBS San Francisco.
Additional details about the cause of the collision remain unknown. "So it sort of gives you a thought of the velocities that were associated with this mischance". The suspect is now in the hospital being treated for his injuries.
Camilleri had been with the CHP for a year and four months.
Spike in opioid overdoses causes drop in life expectancy
A three-year decline happened in 1916, 1917 and 1918, which included the worst flu pandemic in modern history. Large numbers of Americans have died from opioid overdoses in the last few years, and the numbers are rising.
CHP Assistant Chief Ernie Sanchez named the dead officer as 33-year-old Anthony Camilleri Sr., who leaves behind three children and his wife, CBS San Francisco reported.
Banners at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in the fallen officer's respect, as indicated by an announcement from Gov.
The second officer suffered minor injuries.
Velasquez, who was sitting in the driver's seat, was injured and later released from the hospital.
