He attacked eight people in all, including a 12-year-old child, at different sites.

About three hours after the stabbings, police arrested a man matching that description who had initially tried to evade officers.

According to police, the suspect was captured travelling by bicycle a few kilometres south of where the attacks took place.

They described the man as about 40, wearing a green jacket and grey pants, with a black bike, and carrying a backpack and a sleeping mat.

He said police have "no serious doubts" that the suspect was the assailant, and that there was no longer any danger to the public.

Police have urged people in the city to remain at home.
