Russel Westbrook signs 5-year extension with Thunder, according to ESPN

Russell Westbrook, the NBA's reigning MVP, has signed a five-year, $205m (£153m) extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Earlier in the summer, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry inked a five-year max contract worth US$201 million (AU$256 million).

Westbrook waited months to sign this contract, and he chose to close the deal on Kevin Durant's birthday.

The Thunder have reloaded this offseason by bringing in high-scoring wings Paul George and Carmelo Anthony via trades.

Will Russell Westbrook's extension be a good deal for the Oklahoma City Thunder?

LSU is now 2-1 on the season while Mississippi State, which went from unranked to 17th, has gotten off to a 3-0 start. Washington State (3-0) is 18th, Florida (1-1) is No. 20 and South Florida (3-0) is No. 21.

George will hit unrestricted free agency next summer, with plenty of buzz circulating around the league about where he'll end up. Over six seasons, the total amounts to $233 million. "I am so honoured to have the opportunity to continue my career here with the Thunder". If Westbrook and Anthony are committed to staying, coupled with a successful season, George's decision becomes tougher. "I was just running down the street a while ago talking about Russell Westbrook and the police pulls me over and asks me if I'm alright!"

Westbrook is entering the final year of his current deal, which will pay him $28.5 million. Westbrook signing is confirmation at least one star is sticking around, and it gives Anthony more incentive to remain with a victor after four consecutive losing seasons in NY. I chronicled the evolution of Russell Westbrook from reckless rookie to riveting league MVP. Both will upgrade the Thunder's roster now, give them future flexibility and cost very little. Because of Westbrook's contract extension, there's at least a better chance that George and Anthony will choose do to do the same.

Westbrook was asked why he has opted not to affix his signature to the Thunder's extension offer just recently, and this recent tweet from USA Today's Sam Amick includes the superstar's response.

The timing of Westbrook's decision to sign the extension has also been a topic of interest across social media.
