Global Reinsurers to Bear 'Significant Share' of Hurricane Maria Claims: AM Best

The White House announced Thursday morning that President Donald Trump authorized the Jones Act to be waived for Puerto Rico.

Ricardo Rosselló petitioned the White House to waive the law, known as the Jones Act, to aid in shipping resources to Puerto Rico while it recovers from devastating hurricanes.

Rihanna has issued a heartfelt plea calling on President Donald Trump to send aid to Puerto Rico in the wake of the devastation Hurricane Maria wrought on the USA territory earlier this month.

The Jones Act dates back to the 1920s and restricts shipping between American ports to American ships with American crews only, which ends up making it just as expensive to ship things from the Puerto Rico as it is to ship from any other port in the world, according to members of Congress who asked the President to lift the restriction. The lack of electricity has also hugely impacted Puerto Rico's clean water supply, and many areas now have no/very limited access. Many people are unable to work or run their businesses because diesel to run generators is in short supply or they can't spend all day waiting for gas to fill their auto. He tweeted that relief supplies are getting through.

"We have hundreds of patients that are either scheduled to get chemo and after that they need to be operated on in four or five weeks", says Escobar.

Within days of the storm's landfall, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Department of Defense, National Guard, U.S. Marines and the Coast Guard were on the ground or on their way to the island, federal officials have said. Reporters on the island are resorting to filing stories using satellite phones by dictation, relying on the few places with generators, whatever cell service and WiFi they can find (especially in the capital San Juan) and other broadcasting services like LiveU and FlyAway to get their stories online and on air.

It's not the first time Trump has come under fire for tweeting edited video in which he could be seen to be promoting violence. While some Twitter users praised Trump for his "sense of humour" following the golf ball retweet, others berated him.

In the wake of the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz - along with other USA politicians, including McCain and Marco Rubio, R-Florida - had urged the suspension of the Jones Act in order to speed up supply deliveries. "And we have a lot of ships out there right now".

During a briefing, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) said she found the conditions "shocking" when she visited the island on Friday.

She showed us pictures of her last trip to Puerto Rico.

While he'd prefer full repeal, McCain said the exemption would help Puerto Rico.

Republican Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., agrees the Defense Department should lead the Puerto Rico relief efforts.

"The wind was so loud, it was frightening because you have no idea how long it's going to go on", Gordon, 37, tells PEOPLE, adding that the pressure from the wind caused her ears to pop.

"I know a lot of kids are suffering from anxiety and bouts of depression because there are students who can't contact any of their family at all", Toro said.
