The body was discovered at around 8.30pm on July 27 after the building's front desk received an anonymous call that a crime had taken place on the tenth floor. Lathem stabbed Cornell-Duranleau with a six-inch drywall knife saw as Warren recorded the murder with a cell phone.
In a statement, Northwestern's Vice President for University Relations Alan Cubbage said Lathem was "terminated for the act of fleeing from police when there was an arrest warrant out for him". It was the two men's first appearance before a Chicago judge, who ordered them to stay in jail until their first-degree murder trials because they are unsafe and a flight risk, reported the Associated Press.
Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. denied defense attorneys' requests to set a bond for Lathem and Warren.
The prosecutor said it was unclear why the men didn't follow through with their plan to kill themselves after they allegedly killed Cornell-Duranleau.
Lathem, 43, and Cornell-Duranleau were boyfriends, Deenihan said, and Warren, 56, allegedly met Lathem over the Internet before traveling to Chicago several days before the slaying. By then, authorities said Lathem and Warren had fled the city.
She said the victim's last words were addressed to Lathem: "Wyndham, what are you doing?"
Andrew Warren and Wyndham Lathem wanted to murder someone before killing themselves to realise a sexual fantasy they both shared.

An autopsy found Cornell-Duranleau died of multiple sharp force injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, and his death was ruled a homicide. The crime scene was covered in blood.
After the killing, Lathem sent a video to friends and relatives apologizing for his involvement, saying it was the "biggest mistake of my life".
Deenihan said the two were scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday afternoon, where the State's attorney would explain Warren's connection to the murder through a bond proffer.
They surrendered separately to authorities in California earlier this month.
