In Mr Joyce's case, this applies to his father.
Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce's citizenship fiasco blew out yesterday to a diplomatic stoush with New Zealand.
The issue has turned into a political fight in New Zealand five weeks out from the September 23 election, with NZ prime minister Bill English accusing Hipkins of interfering in Australian politics.
Their grandfather, Lieutenant-colonel John Patrick Joyce, DCM, OBE, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, served in Gallipoli in World War 1 before rising through the ranks and helping to establish the site for the Waiouru Military Camp before returning to Hampden.
But on Tuesday a number of government ministers implied the New Zealand Labour Party had colluded with the Australian Labor Party to bring down Australia's government.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop cast doubt on whether Canberra could work with New Zealand Labour if it won a general election scheduled for next month. If he was serious about resolving uncertainty for the good governance of this country, uncertainties that involve his Members of Parliament and his Senators, then surely he'd raise the question in the Australian Parliament? "Australian media inquiries were", Dunne tweeted on Tuesday.
George Williams, a law expert from the University of NSW, said the only way Joyce could win in the High Court was if it applied a "generous interpretation" of the constitutional requirements. Another two senators, Matt Canavan and Malcolm Roberts, will also have their eligibility decided by the High Court. She called the questions inappropriate.
