Teen jumps out of plane onto tarmac at SFO

A teenager shocked passengers travelling on a Copa Airlines flight when he flung open the emergency exit and dramatically slid down the wing onto the tarmac, minutes after the plane had touched down in San Francisco.

Officials say the teen, who is a US citizen, was accosted by a construction crew working nearby on the airfield.

SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel confirmed that no runways were affected and there was no operational impact from the incident.

It was not immediately clear why the teenager had leapt from the plane and run. The plane later taxied to its assigned gate and all passengers got off the flight without further problems.

Officials are also questioning passengers who were on the flight, ABC 7 reported.

After "be taken out of the device on the apron", the young man has been apprehended by the maintenance workers and then transferred to officers of the border police, according to Mr Shipping, which described this kind of incidents very rare.

The boy reportedly started running on the tarmac before being intercepted by construction workers.

Passenger Isaac Rodrigues said a flight attendant used her body to block the gap where the door had been until the plane was at the gate. Law enforcement took the teen into custody, according to the airline. The plane went to the assigned gate and all the passengers were de-boarded safely.

"We are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to support the ongoing investigation", the airline said.

"People were yelling, 'Tell the flight attendants".
