Company-wide, Sony Corp. reported net income of $722 million (809 billion yen) on sales of $16.59 billion (1.86 trillion yen). During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2017) in June, the company confirmed that the sales number was 60.4 million worldwide.

Sony Corporation on Tuesday announced its consolidated financial results for the second quarter of the calendar year, i.e. the first quarter of its 2017 fiscal year, boasting a massive surge in profits driven by its recovering imaging sensor business.

The surge in profit reflected the recovery for image sensors from damage from an natural disaster sustained previous year, said the company.

- Visual and Media, which houses its mobile game apps, saw revenue increase to $435.6 million (48.4 billion yen), up 46.4 percent from the first quarter of 2016 when revenue totaled $305.8 million (33.05 billion yen). During the current quarter, restructuring charges, net, increased 0.7 billion yen year-on-year to 2.4 billion yen.

The profitability of the game business is expected to improve in the second half of the business year as more titles get released, Sony said.

The bank also retained its asset purchases of Euro 60 billion a month till December 2017, or beyond, if necessary. Inflation stood at 1.3 percent in June, higher than expected but still below the bank's target of 2 percent.

The semiconductor business' profit in the three-month period stood at 55.4 billion yen, turning around from a 43.5 billion yen loss a year earlier when its manufacturing plant in southwestern Japan was hit by major earthquakes. Sales also experienced a 17% increase on a constant currency basis over last year's ¥141.9 billion ($1.29 billion).

- Digital download revenue, meanwhile, fell 22.1 percent to $116.5 million (12.94 billion yen), down from the $153.66 million (16.6 billion yen) tallied in the first quarter of 2016.

This would be the highest profit since Sony's best-ever year - the FY to the end of March 1998 - when it made profits of $4.77 million.

Today, Sony released information about its financial earnings for the quarter, confirming lifetime shipped sales for PS4 at 63.3 million units.

Operating Income - 170 billion yen in operating income ($1.53 billion), up 5.88% from April's 180 billion yen ($1.62 billion) forecast.
