Local jobless rates up while state's rate continues to improve

In May, the jobless rate had declined to a 10-year low of 4.4 percent. The national unemployment rate for June was 4.4 percent. Twenty-seven states had jobless rate decreases from a year earlier and 23 states and the District had little or no change.
"With the rate rise in June, Humboldt County rose from 12th rank to 17th rank (from the top) among the 58 counties statewide", California Employment Development Department North Coast Labor Market Consultant Randy Weaver wrote in a Friday report. However, overall industry jobs have grown by about 1,100 between June 2016 and June 2017, according to Weaver.
IL posted a small increase in nonfarm payroll jobs, gaining 8,600 jobs over the month.
The total number of area residents unemployed in June was 9,200 less than the same month in 2016.
"The unemployment rate increase and a decline in construction payroll are troublesome, but the trend of declining labor force is something we can not ignore", Illinois Department of Employment Security Director Jeff Mays said.

The sector that saw the most growth between May and June was leisure and hospitality which added 2,900 jobs. Manufacturing, professional and business services and education and health services jobs grew by a combined 2,700 positions over the month.
Five industry sectors reported job declines over the month, down a total of 22,900 jobs. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 800 jobs.
In Dillon County, the rate has dropped from 6.9 percent to 5.6 percent.
In related data, the EDD reported that there were 330,417 people receiving regular Unemployment Insurance benefits during the June survey week. At the same time, new claims for Unemployment Insurance were 46,876 in June, compared with 38,252 in May and 49,975 in June of past year.
