Former House speaker Hastert released from prison

The former speaker served 20 years in Congress and eight years as the highest-ranking member of the House before retiring in 2007.

When Illinois former Gov. George Ryan was released from an IN prison IN 2013 after five years for corruption, he traveled to a halfway house IN Chicago, but was released to return to his home IN Kankakee within hours. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2016 in a case that revealed he sexually abused teenagers while coaching at an IL high school. The judge sentenced the ex-Speaker to two years of supervised release, and he must report to a probation office within three days of the release.

Common sex-offender treatments include lie-detector tests to determine how many times the person sexually abused kids.

The former Speaker had been serving time in the Rochester Federal Medical Center, which provides medical care for inmates.

During his sentencing in a Chicago court previous year, Hastert admitted for the first time that he had sexually abused boys when he taught wrestling at Yorkville High School in a Chicago-area suburb from the 1960s to the early 1980s.

He then broke banking laws by offering the victims hush money.

"They looked to me and I took advantage of them", Hastert was quoted as saying in court.

The Rochester Minnesota Federal Medical Center where Dennis Hastert was being held tells FOX News that he was released Monday and now on home confinement here in IL. The case revealed accusations he sexually abused teenagers while coaching wrestling at a suburban Chicago high school.

Cross still believes Hastert's sentence was a "slap on the wrist" but doesn't fault federal authorities. "If they want to reach out to him, that's their prerogative", Durkin said, "but he should never contact them himself".

The former Speaker admitted to the judge at his April 2016 sentencing hearing that he had sexually abused children in 1970s during his time as a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in IL.

Hastert was released Tuesday from federal prison and is now under the supervision of a Chicago resident re-entry management field office after serving 13 months of a 15-month sentence. Records list his release date as August 16.
