Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence committee, said any move to oust Mueller would "be the last straw" for many in Congress and would have "echoes of Watergate", when President Richard Nixon dismissed special prosecutor Archibald Cox over Cox's subpoenas for White House tapes.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in separate testimony Tuesday that there was no "secret plan" to fire Mueller, nor was there cause. Ruddy added he believes firing Mueller would be a major misstep for the administration.
"Under the regulation, special counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause and I am required to put that cause in writing".
Appearing before the senate appropriations sub-committee in Washington on Tuesday, Mr Rosenstein said that Mr Mueller would be given the independence needed to do his job. "And I'm not going to speculate on what he will or will not do", Sekulow said.
Fleischer and Gingrich had previously vouched for the character and integrity of Mueller, who was appointed Federal Bureau of Investigation director by Bush and whose term was extended an extra two years by Democratic President Barack Obama. I think it's very clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.
He said Attorney General Jeff Sessions is not involved in the Russian Federation probe and has not been briefed on it since his recusal. "I will defend the integrity of that investigation", Rosenstein said.

Commercial flights, which resumed for the first time in 50 years last summer, will still continue between the US and Cuba. The rules also require a daylong schedule of activities created to expose the travelers to ordinary Cubans.
Rosenstein was asked by Sen. In the abstract, he would be the right selection as special counsel in the Russian Federation investigation. The White House officials claimed that he was at the White House on Monday and met people familiar with Trump's judgments.
Asked if he had confidence in Robert Mueller, the special counsel appointed to lead the Russian Federation investigation, Mr Sessions replied: "I have confidence in Mr Mueller but I am not going to discuss any hypotheticals", noting that he was not involved in the Russian Federation investigation.
"All three of them could be lying to me; I don't think so", he said. Look who he is hiring.check fec reports.
A number of key Republicans have publicly advised Trump to keep Mueller.
Is Trump considering firing special counsel... "I personally think it would be a significant mistake, even though I don't think there is a justification [for a special counsel]". The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.
"But what we do know, if indeed the president does fire Mueller, it shows he's impeding the process yet again".
Both Gingrich and Ken Starr were closely involved in the investigation and impeachment of former President Bill Clinton. Still, he added, "I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise".
The White House was quick to dismiss Ruddy's comments.
