According to Overthecap.com, Edelman's contract in 2016 was 37th in the entire National Football League when it came to average salary per year for wide receivers.
Edelman is coming off his most productive season as a pro, in which he caught 98 passes for a career-high 1,106 yards and three touchdowns while starting all 16 games. He was playing on the final year of a four-year, $17 million deal.
NFL Media reported early Thursday the Patriots and Edelman were moving toward a contract extension. Edelman was set to be a free agent after this upcoming season, but now it is looking like Brady and the offense will have JE11 for an extended period of time.

On Friday, in Dixon, Illinois , Tompkins jumped through the open window of a moving auto to potentially save someone's life. I saw him coming at me, so I backed up real fast to the side and jumped out and jumped in his auto to stop it.
The 31-year-old provided one of the stand-out moments of Super Bowl LI, with his diving catch a signature play in their 34-28 comeback win over Atlanta Falcons.
Edelman also holds the Patriots record for most punt returns for a touchdown, with four.
Originally selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Kent State, he has since remained in New England for the past eight seasons. The Patriots are looking to get that situation all taken care of before Edelman can even sniff free agency.
