Locals shared images of themselves with the creature in Indonesia's central Maluku province - with many convinced it is a giant squid.

The massive carcass was found on Hulung Beach on Serum Island on Tuesday night by a local man, the Jakarta Globe reported.

People have been flocking to the beach to get a glimpse of the monstrous sea creature.

Some have speculated that the creature was a giant squid, while others even guessed it was an elephant.

Incredible pictures have surfaced online showing a giant 15-meter-long mysterious creature on a remote Indonesian beach. "From the looks of it, it's unclear how many people can fit in this creature". As much as the ocean can offer up creatures that seem like horrors to our earth-bound sensibilities, in this case the horror is the reality of death and decay, the inevitable end of us all.

"This is a humpback whale", said YouTube user Patasiwa Kumbang Amalatu.

At least one marine scientist has confirmed that the creature is a rotting whale corpse. It was eventually thought to be some form of dolphin, with a representative from the Sakhalin Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography, Nikolay Kim, saying, "I can confidently say that this is some kind of a dolphin".

Weighing two tonnes and measuring nearly 7m in length, locals speculated the creature was some sort of undiscovered dugong.
