But today UKIP are facing a future with no seats at all on Norfolk County Council, while the Conservatives added 13 to take their tally to 55 and win overall control.
Left-leaning Labour, Liberal Democrats, and Greens each have a different stance on Brexit. "There are four and a half weeks of campaigning still to go before the June 8 general election".
"Defence Minister Michael Fallon said: "(These are) encouraging results but I am cautious about predicating the general election on them.
'But we, the whole Labour movement and the British people, can't afford not to seize our moment'.
By calling an early national election, Mrs May has made the local votes a gauge of her leadership, and many of her Conservative candidates have campaigned in recent days using her campaign mantra of "strong and stable leadership".
Her party is also preparing to launch its flagship health policies over the weekend, with the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, scheduled to appear on television on Sunday.
The Liberal Democrat results have been mixed, with some gains and some losses.
The Conservatives took most of those seats, and Nuttall said that was a price Ukip is "prepared to pay" for the prize of leaving the EU. "We have still got to get out there and campaign for every vote".

Political analysts have argued that Ukip had become a "gateway drug" for voters in Labor heartlands to shift to the Tories, which could be hugely damaging for Corbyn's party. They are foreign manufacturers that provide a lifeline to the local population in a largely industrial landscape where the majority of residents voted to leave the European Union.
They won tightly-fought battles for elected mayors in the West Midlands and Tees Valley and forced Labour into third place in its former stronghold of Scotland.
And when I ask them to do interviews for ITV, majority run a mile.
"We will stand up for everyone who doesn't want a second referendum on independence".
Alan Rhodes, who was the Labor leader of Nottinghamshire county council but is now leader of the opposition group, admitted that his party was "in a hard place at the moment". It is more reflective of the national malaise that the party finds itself in.
