Trump to sign agriculture executive order Tuesday

On April 24, former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue was confirmed as the U.S. Department of Agriculture secretary.

Purdue is a former state legislator and two-term governor in Georgia.

"We will be asking Secretary Perdue to establish a task force that does a 180-day review of regulation and policy, legislation that unnecessarily hinders economic growth in the agriculture area", said Ray Starling, the special assistant to the president for agriculture. "He'll be very good for America's farmers and ranchers".

Among the issues the farmers want to discuss with the President: Immigration and trade.

"NPPC and America's pork producers look forward to working with Secretary Perdue".

Trump's budget proposal suggests slashing the Agriculture Department's funding by 21 percent - a cut of $4.7 billion to $17.9 billion - the third-largest proposed cut to any federal agency. Perdue eventually said he would step down from several companies bearing his name to avoid conflicts of interest.

The nomination makes Perdue the first University of Georgia alumnus to be named to the White House cabinet, according to a University of Georgia press release. "Now that he's been confirmed, and on behalf of Wisconsin farm families, I urge the Secretary to take swift action to address Canada's recent harmful actions on dairy exports".

Nadal wins historic 10th Monte Carlo title
Ramos-Vinolas had a chance to finish the match in straight sets but Cilic won the second set tiebreak to force the deciding set. He will also have his sights set on a 10th title in Barcelona next week - Nadal's previous career title, nearly a year ago.

The nomination earlier passed the Senate Agriculture Committee with only one vote in opposition, although some Midwestern senators raised concerns that Perdue was not from a major agricultural production state.

"The list of issues facing our industry is long, but we stand ready to work with Secretary Perdue and his staff to ensure USA cattle producers are provided a fair and competitive marketplace", says the United States Cattlemen's Association.

But he now will have to contend with Trump's proposals for the USDA, which could disproportionately affect rural residents and farmers nationwide, putting him in between the White House's priorities and those of farmers who helped elect Trump.

"As secretary of agriculture, my cousin has a big job", the senator said.

With Perdue's confirmation, the last two Trump Cabinet-level nominees awaiting Senate confirmation are Alexander Acosta for labor secretary and Robert Lighthizer for US trade representative. U.S. Sen. David Perdue abstained since he is Gov.

Throughout our nation's history, our farmers, ranchers, and business owners in rural America have survived drought, disease, floods, tornadoes, and whatever else Mother Nature throws at them.

The Senate easily approved Sonny Perdue on Monday to lead the U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA). I supported Sonny Perdue because I'm hopeful we can find common ground on these issues, among many others.
