Police in Toronto today announced the arrests of more than 100 men accused of using the internet to solicit sex with minors as young as 13.
"We essentially put up advertisements online when men were looking to purchase sex they were told that they were communicating with a child, with a prostituted child", Truong told reporters during a press conference Friday. -Sgt. Thai Truong and Susan Orlando the provincial coordinator of the Attorney General's human trafficking prosecution team will all be in attendance.
The goal of the undercover operation was to reduce demand for child prostitution by putting the men who seek it out behind bars, according to police.
Most of the arrests took place in York Region but the men who were arrested came from across the GTA and outside of Ontario, police said.
Police said dismantling child prostitution rings was always hard: young people pressed into prostitution sometimes live in fear and are not always willing to denounce their pimps.
Alaska oil well leaking gas in northern part of state
Hilcorp Alaska has discovered several oil and natural-gas leaks in pipelines, but ice made had it impossible to fix the leaks. The well, located in the Greater Prudhoe Bay area, was venting gas, which caused a spray of crude oil to impact the well pad.
York Regional Police shared one of the interactions they had with a 25-year-old pilot.
Police showed texts allegedly sent from a 51-year-old trucker to an officer posing as a 16-year-old girl during the project. "We see a lot of lives destroyed". The men charged were between the ages of 18 and 71.
Of the 104 cases placed before the courts, 40 of the cases have been resolved, with 64 still before the courts.
Truong said the "alarming statistic" police identified after interviews and investigations in 2013 was the average age of entry into prostitution was 14.8 years old in York Region. Five of the cases have been withdrawn while three went to trial and the suspects were found guilty.
