Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley booked into jail, resigns

The governor is accused of threatening staffers, greeting hotel staff in his underwear thinking that it was Mason, misusing state resources during his affair, and firing the state's top law enforcement official Spencer Collier, who has alleged that he lost his job for his refusal to help cover up the affair. Both charges are minor, but the decision to resign ended the state investigation and an impeachment push against him in the Alabama Legislature.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley formally resigned from office Monday afternoon as he faced impeachment hearings earlier in the day. He was charged with failing to file a major contribution report and converting campaign contributions to personal use, according to the Times. Prosecutors said that was a violation of a state law requiring all donations larger than $20,000 to be reported within two business days.

At the heart of the matter is Bentley's relationship with a former staffer named Rebekah Mason.

Section 127 of Article V of the Alabama Constitution clearly states that in cases of removal from office, death or resignation, the lieutenant governor shall become governor.

Before her career in politics, she worked as a banker, assistant hospital administrator, high school teacher, and served as a Alabama House of Representatives reading clerk and assistant director of the Department of Commerce. He also agreed not to run for another political office, Brooks said.

The Alabama Republican Party on Sunday called for Bentley to step down.

Bentley's resignation follows the ouster of former House Speaker Mike Hubbard, who left office in 2016 after being convicted on ethics charges, and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, who was suspended from his post a year ago over an order opposing same-sex marriage.

Bentley said in his statement that he no longer wanted to subject his family and staff "to the consequences that my past actions have brought upon them". The governor's lawyers will respond to those accusations later in the week. "It states to all of us that no one is above the law, even the governor".

When I took the oath of office in 2011 and then again in 2015, I was prepared for this day, but never desired or expected it. The report authors also specified that they considered Bentley's attempts to obstruct the investigation by withholding messages as an "independent ground for impeachment". Sharman says the governor's former wife turned over others. His wife was also able to read his text message conversations with Mason, as his state-issued phone was linked to the state-issued iPad that he had gifted her. Dianne Bentley provided the messages to the committee.
