U.S. soldier killed in anti-IS operations in Afghanistan

U.S. Forces Afghanistan said a U.S. special operations soldier died during an operation against the Islamic State in the eastern Nangarhar Province.

A USA soldier was killed during the counter-terrorism operations in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The military has not yet released any details of the circumstances surrounding the soldier's death nor released any details of the operator's identity.

Jawid Salim, a spokesman for the Afghan commando forces, said the USA soldier was accompanying Afghan special forces in an operation in Shadal Bazaar and he was mortally wounded by a roadside bomb.

"The soldier was mortally wounded late Saturday during an operation in (eastern) Nangarhar Province". This is the first United States combat death in Afghanistan in 2017.

More than 2,200 American service-members have been killed since the war in Afghanistan began in 2001, according to the Department of Defense.

The US counterterrorism mission is separate from the NATO-led effort to train, advise and assist the Afghan army and police force.

U.S. officials believe the group has 700 fighters in the country but their Afghan counterparts estimate the number could be about 1,500.
