Abe, Trump agree on close coordination over N. Korea issues

A combination of file photos show U.S. President Donald Trump (L) in Washington March 1, 2017 and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo November 18, 2014.

For Pyongyang, meanwhile, the news of Trump's military action against Syria probably spoke louder than words.

President Donald Trump may have sent the fanatical dictator of North Korea, Kim Jung Un, into hiding.

North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea off the Korean Peninsula earlier this week, the latest in a series of recent test firings.

In a week that saw events unfolding daily, Trump's announcement Thursday about the USA missile strike against Syria happened against the backdrop of the president's Florida resort where he was hosting Chinese Leader Xi Jinping and his wife.

The Syrian opposition has reported that Assad's forces have begun flying again from an air base struck last week by USA missiles, and Graham says Assad is telling Trump - "F. you' - by resuming those flights".

"The US missile attack against Syria is a clear and intolerable act of aggression against a sovereign state and we strongly condemn it", KCNA news agency quoted an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry as saying.

CNN reported on Sunday that US warships were en route to the Korean Peninsula due to provocations from North Korea.

The United States will take its own measures to deal with the North Korean threat if China is unable or unwilling to help, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday. Unlike Syria, North Korea has a means of striking back.

The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore toward the Korean peninsula, according to the official.

North Korea considers Syria an ally, and the leaders of the two countries - Kim Jong-Un and Bashar al-Assad - have exchanged messages of warm wishes and pledges of friendship and cooperation between the two countries in the past.

Along with its rapidly advancing nuclear and long-range missile capabilities, it has its artillery and short-range missiles trained on Seoul, the capital of US ally South Korea and a city of more than 10 million people.

North Korea has been pursuing its nuclear and missile programs at an unprecedented pace since a year ago, with an aim to expand its deterrence against Washington and diversify its line-up of nuclear-equipped missiles, another expert said.

On Thursday, Trump ordered the surprise attack against a military air base in Syria, signaling he was prepared to act in the protection of US interests.

Washington denies it has any intention of invading the North.
