Those kinds of stores would dramatically widen Amazon's real-life retail presence, which is now limited to groceries and books. Shown is a contractor working on an Amazon.com Inc. drive-through grocery location under construction in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. The first of these stores is located just north of downtown, near Amazon's concentration of office buildings at the south end of Lake Union.
Amazon is also making a strong commitment to the grocery category. It's already available in many U.S. cities, and Amazon is also testing several futuristic options for Fresh, including drive-in grocery pickup centers in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood where shoppers have online orders loaded into their cars. At an Amazon Go convenience store in Seattle, items are automatically scanned so shoppers can skip the checkout.
Amazon is also said to be exploring an electronics-store concept that would be much like Apple's retail stores to sell Amazon devices and services, such as the company's Echo smart home speaker and its Prime Video streaming service. With that store, users will be able to walk in and pick up groceries on their own, then walk out without needing to go through the cashier process.

This new service, which has been launched in beta only for Amazon employees in Seattle, enables them to conveniently order groceries from the comfort of their homes. The fact being early to the two technology platforms puts the retail chain in good position to compete with anything Amazon rolls out.
