Officers Among Three Shot In Whittier, Reports Say

Police later found out that the vehicle the man was driving had been reported stolen. The two officers were transported to UCI Medical Center while the suspect was taken to LA County-USC Medical Center, Marrujo said.

A Whittier police officer was killed and a second officer was wounded in a shootout with a suspect Monday, authorities said.

Police returned fire, wounding the suspect.

The shooting happened around 8 a.m., police officer John Scoggins told the Whittier Daily News. The slain officer's name was not released.

"When they get him out of the auto, they go to pat him down for weapons, they can see he's got tattoos all over his face and all over his neck", Corina said at a news conference. "You just never know when officers respond to a call what they are going to run into". When the officers arrived they were confronted by that driver, who was armed with a semiautomatic handgun, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

His name was not released, and his condition was not immediately available.

In the midst of a pat down, Corina said the man pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Their conditions were not known.
