An American citizen was arrested in Mexico for attempting to assassinate a US consular official in a Guadalajara parking lot.
According to the consulate's Facebook page, a man they identify as the official is shown paying a parking ticket at an automated machine and the suspected gunman is seen following him. Surveillance video showed Ashcraft climbing into his vehicle and pulling up to the ticket machine at the lot exit when the shooter steps up and fires once through the windshield.
Because he has diplomatic status, Ashcroft is considered an internationally protected person working as an agent of the USA government, which is why the case was transferred to the US courts.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement thanking Mexico for the quick arrest. A military helicopter was shot out of the sky, and the cartel "shut the state of Jalisco down" with 40 road blockades, a U.S. State Department report said. My thoughts and prayers remain with this officer and his family during this hard time. Local police said he was in stable condition.
According to the consulate's statement on Facebook, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is willing to give $20,000 worth of reward in exchange for useful information that could help with the identification of the attacker.

According to DiMarco, Zafar was identified a day later by another security video, showing him making a purchase at a Starbucks about an hour before the shooting.
