DU's Terry clinches gold medal for USA

His goal came 3:04 into the second period and cut Canada's lead to 2-1.

Then with 9:30 left in the period, the USA tied the game at 2-2 on a power play goal from Kieffer Bellows. The game captivated viewers across the country, as preliminary overnight data from Numeris confirms that 11.1 million unique viewers - more than 30% of Canadians - tuned in last night to watch the back-and-forth affair that culminated with Team USA's dramatic shootout victory. The U.S. emerged victorious on the strength of stellar saves from Tyler Parsons and more shootout heroics from Troy Terry. First rounders Kieffer Bellows and Colin White were credited with the tallies, putting a stamp on one of the greatest World Junior Championship games of all-time.

However, the USA bounced right back in the second period scoring their first goal after three minutes of play at 3:04.

The final 13 minutes of regulation were frantic, with each team faltering on chance after chance.

Then the USA competed its first of two rallies from a two-goal deficit.

The two teams met on December 31 in the round robin stage, with the United States beating Canada 3-1.

During Thursday's telecast on NHL Network and live stream on NHL.com, color commentator Dave Starman said Anderson told him he texted the UMD coaches saying he wanted to play this weekend against the Tigers.

Despite Team Canada losing to the U.S. in a shootout in the gold medal game of the World Juniors, Thomas Chabot was named tournament MVP.

In the shootout, both goalies made saves on the first three attempts.

"He has great skill, great hands", U.S. defenceman Charlie McAvoy said of Terry.

After the medals and handshakes were distributed, the flags were raised and The Star-Spangled Banner began to play.and that's when we all learned that Team USA should really just stick to hockey.

Chabot was also chosen the best defenceman of the tournament and best player of the final.

Julien Gauthier scored a pair of goals for Team Canada. "To go down 4-2 in the third and then come right back like we did, resilience is the only word I have". It's a roller coaster, we knew it would be a roller coaster, but we were cool the whole time.

In the five-round shootout, Terry - who scored three times in Wednesday's shootout win over Russian Federation in the semifinals, including the decisive goal - scored in the top of the fourth round to account for the only goal. Hopefully, the IIHF will consider a continuous overtime in the future for the Gold Medal Game.

The tournament also serves as a stage for rising hockey stars to elevate their stock and prove they belong in a competition that pits them against some of the top under-20 players in the world. The Americans have experienced every emotion possible in the tournament- the euphoria of four straight victories in the prelims, including a decisive win over Canada on New Year's Eve, the nerves and queasy disappointment after a close win against the Swiss, and just about every other emotion in between during the shootout against the Russians.

USA Hockey and this year's junior team should be proud of themselves. With the wins over Canada few and far between in the sport of hockey, we will take as many as we can get.
