US halts it diplomatic mission in Turkey after Russian ambassador murder

Karlov died on Monday after being shot multiple times at an art exhibition in the Turkish capital Ankara.

This morning (Tuesday), it was announced that Turkish police have arrested six people suspected of being somehow involved in the assassination of Russia's ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov.

The authorities in Turkey have detained family members of police gunman Mevlut Mert Altintas in connection with the shooting of Russia's ambassador to Turkey in Ankara yesterday (19 December).

Russian Federation is a close ally of the regime in Turkey's neighbor, Syria, and is waging an airstrikes campaign there.

The assassination was captured by Associated Press photographer Burhan Ozbilici.

Russian president Vladimir Putin said the attack was "undoubtedly" aimed at disrupting the normalisation of relations between the two countries, which warmed over the summer.

But why was the substance so deadly? The nine surviving victims are in a critical condition, Mr Zubovsky added. Numerous victims are residents of one neighborhood, Novo-Lenino, investigators said.

Mrs Karlov was present when Altintas opened fire on her husband, who took up his posting in Ankara in 2013.

The three foreign ministers have agreed to facilitate a deal between the Syrian government and the opposition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after their meeting on Tuesday.

"We also wish those injured in the attack a speedy and full recovery", Zuma said. He offered to return the body to Russian Federation on a Turkisjh plane, but Putin opted to send its own team "to investigate the real motivation" behind the killing and to take his body to Russian Federation.

The gunman shouted about Aleppo in Turkish, and also yelled "Allahu akbar", the Arabic phrase for "God is great", continuing in Arabic: "We are the descendants of those who supported the Prophet Muhammad, for jihad". "We will not let this affect our relations, our solidarity in the fight against terrorism, and first of all against terrorist organizations".

The shooting happened a day before Iranian, Turkish and Russian diplomats met to discuss the situation in Aleppo.

Russian and Turkish officials have been working together to resolve the refugee crisis in Aleppo, caused, in part, by Russian air strikes on Syrian rebels.
