3 killed in 40-vehicle pileup on slick MI interstate

Three people were killed Thursday when up to 40 vehicles were involved in a crash on westbound I-96 near Fowlerville.

Eleven other people were injured and taken to hospitals, but all are expected to be okay.

An audit conducted after the crash called for relocating a cable barrier, more electronic signs, new lighting and freeway courtesy patrols, according to an Associated Press report.

Police said crashes had occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-96, as well.

The department believes the accident was weather related, with a chain reaction caused by slick roads and whiteout conditions.

A 30 to 40 vehicle accident on I-96 near Fowlerville has closed traffic in both directions of the freeway there.

Lanes on I-96 near Okemos Road are reportedly open again.

First white knuckle, white out drive of the season claimed a couple dozen cars and trucks on 96.

"This is the worst accident that I've ever seen, as far as the amount of cars involved and the severity of the crash", Sanborn said.
